Scots language to feature in Finnish lecture series
1st November 2006
Academic, Atina NIhtinen, will give a lecture on changing attitudes to Scots as part of a lecture series that will be held at the Renvall Institute, Helsinki during the next few months. Nihtinen has a long standing interest in the language situation in Scotland and recently visited Shetland to research local attitudes to language and identity. In her latest project Nihtinen will compare Shetland with Tornedal and land. The Tornedal region of Sweden has a minority language community who speak a local version of Finnish known as Menkieli (our language), and land is a semi-autonomous Swedish speaking island group which is part of the Finnish state.
