New MSPs Take the Oath in Scots
11th May 2011
Several new SNP Members of the Scottish Parliament today took their oaths in Scots as well as English. All MSPs are obliged to swear in using English but may repeat the oath or affirmation in another language.
Mark McDonald (North East Scotland), Kevin Stewart (Aberdeen Central) and Maureen Watt (Aberdeen South and North Kincardine) took their oaths in Doric, the North-East Scots dialect. Dave Thompson (Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch) used Gaelic and Doric, while Mike Russell (Argyll and Bute) opted to use the Doric translation of the oath alongside a Gaelic version.
In addition, three other MSPs — Alasdair Allan, John Finnie and Rob Gibson — swore in in Gaelic. Edinburgh Central MSP Marco Biagi took his oath in Italian and Humza Yousaf, SNP list member for Glasgow, took his in Urdu.
The following are the Scots texts of the oath and affirmation:
I, [name], depone aat I wull be leal and bear aefauld alleadgance tae her majesty Queen Elizabeth her airs an ony fa come aifter her anent the law/laa. Sae help me God.
I, [name], dee solemly, aefauldly an truly declare and depone at I will be leal and bear aefauld alleadgance tae her maijesty Queen Elizabeth her airs an ony fa come aifter her anent the law.
