Theatre goers are in for a treat this Christmas season as The Steamie returns to the circuit. The hit comedy drama, written by Tony Roper, and first performed at The Crawford Theatre, Glasgow, back in 1987, is set to open at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow. Set on Hogmanay night during the 1950’s, the drama tells the story of four women who are trying to get all their washings done in time for the bells down at the Steamie or public wash house. With songs by David Anderson, there is plenty of dancing and singing on hand, and, of course, the characters make plenty of use of the West Central form of the Scots language too. The cast consists of some well-known faces from Scottish comedy and drama – Louise McCarthy (playing Magrit), Mary McCusker (as Mrs Culfeathers), Gayle Telfer Stevens (as Dolly), Fiona Wood (as Doreen) and Harry Ward (as Andy).

The Steamie is playing at the SSE Hydro, Exhibition Way, Stobcross Street, Glasgow, on Friday 27 December 2019 at 7.30pm, Saturday 28 December at 2.30pm, Sunday 29 December at 6pm, Monday 30 December at 7.30pm, and Tuesday 31 December at 1pm.
