MSP calls for education parity
10th January 2011
Recently Dr Bill Wilson MSP (pictured) called on Michael Russell Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning to extend parity to the Scots language in education. Mr Russell, who was quoted in Holyrood Magazine (December), stated that he was "willing to consider a legal right to Gaelic education." Mr Russell, himself a Gaelic learner, has been looking at ways to improve and provide a firmer basis for Gaelic medium education. Responding to this, Dr Wilson said that he had previously had very positive responses from local education authorities with regard to the introduction of Scots in the classroom and hoped that Mr Russell would not neglect Scots. Dr Wilson commented "I hope Mr Russell will give serious thought to bolstering the educational position of both Scotland's spoken native languages."
