The Islands Bill
19th June 2017
Speakers of the dialects of Orkney and Shetland will no doubt be interested in the Islands (Scotland) Bill (SP Bill 15) which was introduced to the Scottish Parliament on 9 June 2017. This Bill obliges Scottish ministers, who are preparing the plan, to consult persons who may represent the interests of island communities which may be affected by any proposals contained in the plan. According to the proposed Bill, the distinctive characteristics of island communities must be taken into account when developing the plan. The Bill will naturally have a bearing on the culture and heritage of Orkney and Shetland, including the dialects of the islands.
Anyone who represents communities or groups within Orkney or Shetland may give evidence in relation to the Bill and is invited to contact the Scottish Government.
