Scots Song Online
4th July 2013
On 20 June the Department of Celtic and Scottish Studies (University of Edinburgh) officially launched an important online resource for the Scots language. Songs collected a hundred years ago by Gavin Greig and James Bruce Duncan – The Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection – are now regarded as a treasure trove, showcasing ballads and song drawn mostly from the North East of Scotland. Now singers have been filmed performing 35 of the songs for a project developed by Frieda Morrison who is Artist in Residence at Celtic and Scottish Studies. Morrison hopes that this will prove an important step in opening up the music and song to students around the world. The singers taking part are Aileen Carr, Jo Miller, Alison McMorland, Geordie McIntyre, The Spiers Family, Lucy Pringle, Siobhan Miller, Brian Miller, David Francis, Mairi Campbell, Scott Gardiner, Kath Campbell, Frieda Morrison, and the Scots Language Centre’s very own music and song specialist Steve Byrne.
