Take the Scots Online Survey
11th March 2014
Student Theo Jones, who is studying linguistics at the University of Groningen (Netherlands), is calling for Scottish residents to help out by taking a short survey on the Scots language. Jones, whose area of interest is the Germanic languages, is currently writing a dissertation on Scots and would like to investigate attitudes towards Scots by Scottish residents, and, secondly, study the mutual intelligibility between English and Scots by asking English speakers in other parts of the UK to translate written and spoken Scots into English.
Jones has now developed the first of his online surveys which he hopes Scottish residents will offer to take part in. The survey, which consists of 22 tick box questions, takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete and covers the status of Scots, whether or not, and how often, respondents speak Scots, in which situations it might be spoken or written, and in what ways you think Scots relates to culture, education, identity and the media in Scotland.
