North East Scots Language Board
6th June 2018
March 2018 saw the launch of the North East Scots Language Board. It is based at the Elphinstone Institute at the University of Aberdeen and is supported by a number of public bodies including Aberdeen and Robert Gordon Universities, Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Angus and Moray councils, as well as a host of individual Scots language academics and supporters.
The Board aims to encourage the North East dialect of Scots – or Doric – in broadcasting, education and a number of other areas, working to achieve parity for Scots with English and Gaelic in many respects. The Board also aims to provide opportunities for those wishing to learn Scots. The area in which the Board will work includes the whole region stretching from Nairn in an arc down the east coast as far as Dundee.
