Elvis is getting a Doric makeover this month at the Edinburgh Festival. A play called Aye, Elvis, written by Morna Young and starring Joyce Falconer of River City fame, is now showing at the Fringe Festival. In this comedy Joyce plays an Aberdonian shop worker and carer who wins a prize at a karaoke night with her rendition of ‘Hound Dog’ and goes on to become an Elvis impersonator dreaming of the big time. The show is performed entirely in North East Scots aka The Doric and Joyce doesn’t hold back. She said that recently a party of Americans were enthralled by the whole concept, and language. Speaking to the press Joyce concluded “It’s that thing with Scots language, how we’ll quite happily listen to really, really strong accents from elsewhere but there’s sometimes, an attitude of ‘oh it can be terribly difficult, the Scots.” “You just have to tune your ears, and open your lugs.”
