Small business using Scots language product
8th March 2011
A new business specialising in North East Scots – the Doric – has recently been launched. Doric Ditties is the creation of Alison Skinner, a native of Aberdeen who now lives in Portnockie in Banffshire. The business specialises in personalised gift poetry for all occasions – composed in North East Scots. Alison has had a life long interest in her native dialect of the language and began writing poetry for family and friends when she was younger. These were composed to commemorate birthdays, retirements and anniversaries and people thought they were so well done that Alison should do it on a professional basis. It is Alison’s hope to bring the culture and language of the region to a wider audience and is happy to tailor the language to suit individual needs. For example, she has provided translations for clients in the USA and always involves clients in the process, ensuring the product is just what they are looking for. But that’s not all because Alison has two strings to her bow. She is also a photographer and likes to combine her Scots texts with pictures from the scenery of the North East, creating a unique range of gifts.
