Scots Language Centre Centre for the Scots Leid

Scotland Library, Edinburgh

1st April 2010

Central Library in Edinburgh has a comprehensive collection of books about Scotland. Within this collection a substantial number are in the Scots language or about the language. While some such as the Jamiesons or Scottish National Dictionaries are reference only, there is a big selection of books available for lending. The collection is of interest to those interested in Scots language as it covers the Scots language spoken in all parts of Scotland. The library staff are also interested in hearing of any new publications not currently held in stock.

The collection includes
-dictionaries
-poetry
-Quotations and proverbs
-children's books
-collections of songs and ballads
-literature from the early Scots period (Early Makars, Gavin Douglas, Harry's Wallace) through to the present
-area specific dialect books
-academic and popular

The library is also interested in setting up an internet Scots language book group and hopes to involve a world-wide audience in this project. Currently most lending stock is viewable online and can be borrowed by those outwith Edinburgh by interlibrary loan. There is also a substantial stock of mostly Scots literature held in store behind the scenes and the library is looking at putting this catalogue online as well.
