JM Barrie at the National Library
6th April 2010
The National Library of Scotland is celebrating the life and work of James Matthew Barrie, Scottish writer and playwright. Barrie was born on 9 May 1860, in Kirriemuir, Angus, making May 2010 the 150th anniversary of his birth. He is best remembered for his character Peter Pan, who first appeared in 1901, but Barrie was also a Scots speaker and his earlier writings contained much dialogue in Scots, and the Scots of his native Angus. Indeed, his first Novel, called ‘Auld Licht Idylls’ (published in 1888) is typical of writing in Scots at that period. The National Library is mounting an exhibition of writings and various personal items connected with Barrie which can be seen during the entire month of May at the NLS, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh.
