Dundee Concert in Scots
29th April 2010
A grand concert is to be held in the Scots language in Dundee. On Sunday 16 May 2010 there will be a concert celebrating the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation in 1560. This will be held in St Salvador's Church, St Salvador Street, in Dundee, beginning at 7.30pm. Called 'Sangs of the Scottis Reformatioun', the pieces will be sung by the Lindores Consort, directed by Andrew Macintosh, and with readings from the 'Gude and Godlie Ballatis' by Jamie Reid Baxter. The 'Gude and Godlie ballatis' were written in Scots in the 1540's by the Dundee merchant John Wedderburn. There will also be music composed by the Dundonians Andrew kemp (died 1572) and John Buchan (died 1610) as well as the Dunfermline man John Angus (died 1596). On sale there will also be a collection of poems in Scots by Elizabeth Melville (died 1640) who was daughter of the Scottish courtier and diarist Sir James Melville of Halhill in Fife. These were only rediscovered in 2002. For all those who will appreciate the combination of Scots language, music, and literature - read and sung - this is a rare event not to be missed.
Tickets on the door £5 (£4 concession).
