Falkirk Pupils learn about Scots
19th April 2010
A Falkirk primary school is taking a new approach to the use of Scots in the classroom, The Falkirk Herald reports. Pupils at Nethermains Primary have been working with well-known Scots writer Matthew Fitt. The head teacher, Mary Connolly, says it has had a really good effect on the pupils, especially the boys, who have been very interested in reading som of the Scots texts:
"We use a bi-lingual approach. Not all our classes are in Scots so we do still use the English language.
''But, if a pupil gives us an answer in Scots during an English speaking class, we would never say to them not to speak like that.
''We would say it's a good answer but ask them what it would be in English"
Other schools in the area are also encouraging the use of Scots.
